Missing Japanese mountain climber rescued in Indonesia

Rescuers lifted a Japanese mountain climber to safety and transported him to hospital a day after he was found alive in a ravine of a mountain in Indonesia’s North Sumatra Province, Japanese consular officials said.

Kosei Yamada, 39, from Saitama Prefecture, had been reported missing after he left on a solo climbing trip on the 2,212-meter Mt. Sibayak, about 50 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital of Medan, on Wednesday.

The Japanese consulate general in Medan said consular officers visited Yamada at the hospital. Yamada looked physically exhausted but was able to walk on his own, a Japanese consular official said.

Rescuers from a search and rescue centre in Medan on Saturday found Yamada in a ravine near the top of the mountain but were unable to mount an evacuation because of inclement weather. Rescuers stayed with Yamada overnight in the ravine.
