Mubarak confidant investigated for corruption
Egypt’s justice ministry has ordered the 15 day detention of a former regime stalwart pending investigations into corruption charges.
The state news agency reported that Safwat el-Sherif, the secretary general of the ruling party and one of the most powerful men in the former regime, was remanded into custody following 12 hours of questioning.
On Monday's report said he was being investigated on charges of profiteering, abusing his position to amass wealth illegally and corrupting public morals.
El-Sherif served for more than 20 years as Hosni Mubarak’s powerful information minister, and has been a public figure for the last half century.
El-Sherif was one of Mubarak’s top advisers and was seen as one of the main architects of Egypt’s police state.
