Nikki 1st US Indian woman as governor
Nikki Haley, the daughter of Sikh immigrant parents from Amritsar, created history by becoming the first woman to win the governor’s race in South Carolina and the first Indian-American woman to become a US governor. Ms Haley, born Nimrata Randhawa, will be America’s second Indian-American governor after Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal, also a Republican, who became the first three years ago.
The 38-year-old mother of two defeated Democrat Vincent Sheheen with a surprisingly close margin of 51-47 per cent. —IANS
