NKorea for 'nuclear deterrent' war

Seoul: North Korea is prepared to launch a 'sacred war' based on its nuclear deterrent, the North's state media said on Thursday amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.

"The revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK are getting fully prepared to launch a sacred war of justice of Korean style based on the nuclear deterrent at anytime necessary to cope with the enemies' actions deliberately pushing the situation to the brink of a war," the Korean Central News Agency said.

KCNA said armed forces minister Kim Young-Chun made the warning during a meeting in Pyongyang marking the 19th anniversary of leader Kim Jong-Il gaining supreme command of the Korean People's Army.

Pyongyang also repeated its charge that military live-fire exercises by South Korea were in preparation for a new Korean war.

"The South Korean puppet forces perpetrated such grave military provocation as renewing their shelling against the DPRK during their recent exercises for a war of aggression," KCNA said.

South Korea's military on Thursday held a live-fire drill involving tanks, artillery and jet fighters in a major show of strength a month after North Korea launched an attack on a border island which left four dead.
