Over 1,000 held in Myanmar for breaking the law

Over 1,000 people have been arrested in western Myanmar's Rakhine state for breaking the law and violating human rights, state media reported Saturday.

As many as 1,081 people have been arrested in the region, currently under a state of emergency, Xinhua reported citing the New Light of Myanmar.

Authorities seized illegal arms like swords, spears, bows, arrows, spikes and catapults.

A series of riots in Rakhine, which began in the later part of October, has left more than 32,000 people homeless, the report said.

The toll has risen to 89, while the number of injured has reached 136.

A total of 5,351 houses were burnt down, along with 14 religious buildings.

Rakhine has been under a state of emergency since June 10. A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been slapped in nine major townships - Maungtaw, Buthidaung, Sittway, Thandwe, Kyaukphyu, Yanbye, Kyauktaw, Minbya and Mrauk.
