Over lakh kg of fish perish due to ammonia discharge in China
Beijing: Over a lakh kilogrammes of fish perished in China following discharge of ammonia by a chemical plant in one of the major rivers, causing a major aquatic disaster.
Ammonia discharged by a chemical plant in central China's Hubei Province has led to a huge number of dead fish in several sections of the Fuhe River in the last two days, local officials said. The incident has cast a shadow over Huanghualao Village in Huangpi District of Wuhan, where most of the 2,000 villagers live by fishing in the river.
Around a lakh of kilogrammes of dead fish has been cleared from 40 kilometres of the Fuhe River in the suburbs of Wuhan City, they said.

Sampling of the drain outlet of the Hubei Shuanghuan Science and Technology Stock Co Ltd, showed that ammonia density reached 196 mg per litre on Tuesday, far in excess of the national standard, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted local environmental protection department as saying.
The chemical manufacturer, based in Yingcheng, Xiaogan City, is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The provincial environmental protection department has ordered the company to suspend operations and rectify its pollution control facilities.
