Workers at Centrelink call centre, Australia, have been asked to time their toilet breaks and are reprimanded if they take more than five minutes.

A staff member at one NSW centre revealed that the employees were asked to punch an individual identity code into their phone every time they went to the loo and had to give an explanation to management if they exceed the time limit.

“If you go to the toilet for longer than five minutes, you’ve got to do a ‘please explain’,” the Daily Telegraph quoted the staff as telling the Sunday Telegraph.

The woman, who asked not to be named in fear of losing her job, complained that the strict protocol had turned the office into a ‘battery hen-type workplace’ and resulted in a high turnover of staff.

“There are seven cubicles for more than 160 women (at the call centre). It’s cringe-worthy,” she said.

“Even newbies we get working there from time to time are shocked. We’ve had people stand up and just walk out. They just said: ‘This is absolute rubbish’,” she added.
