Pak Army does not back Prez n-policy: Wikileaks
Dec. 8: The Pakistan Army Chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, does not support the President, Mr Asif Ali Zardari’s plan to adopt a “no-first-use” nuclear weapon policy, reveals a secret US diplomatic released by Wikileaks. Although the secret cable from US ambassador to Pakistan, Mr Anne Patterson, says Gen. Kayani has “remained silent on the subject,” the Pakistan Army Chief “does not support President Zardari’s statement last year to the Indian press that Pakistan would adopt a “no-first-use” policy on nuclear weapons.”
Despite increasing financial constraints “we believe that the military is proceeding with an expansion of both its growing strategic weapons and missile programmes,” it added. Meanwhile, Australia’s foreign minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, said on Wednesday that the US government is responsible for the leaking of hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic memos and cautioned against blaming the website that published the secret cables and its founder.
Mr Rudd said that Australia would support Mr Assange as it would any Australian arrested abroad.
