Pak plane lands on highway

In an incident that looked like straight out of a movie, a small Pakistani aircraft of a private airlines today made an emergency landing on the main highway connecting Pakistan's biggest city to the rest of the country.

The aircraft which developed engine fault sent an SOS to the Civil Aviation Authority asking permission to make an emergency landing following which authorities cleared a portion of the highway for the small Piper plane carrying the pilot and two trainees to land on the highway this morning, 75 kms from Karachi.

"The aircraft was on a routine training flight with a pilot and two members (trainee pilots) on board and after it took off from Nawabshah it developed an engine fault," CAA official, Pervez George said.

Nawabshah is around 255 kilometres from Karachi. George said the small plane was owned by the private company, Schon airlines and was allowed to land on the highway after one of its two engines developed a fault.

"The highway police cooperated in the whole exercise and the plane made a safe landing," he added.

This year there have been incidents of aircraft crashes in and around Karachi and in both cases the aircrafts were operated by private companies.
