Pak seeks time to clarify Davis status
Feb. 17: The Pakistan government on Thursday sought time from the court to clarify the diplomatic status of US national Raymond Davis who is being tried in Lahore on murder charges.
“The court was told that the foreign office needs more time to submit a response on the diplomatic status of Raymond Davis,” a court official in Lahore said. The Lahore high court later adjourned the hearing till March 14.
Davis was arrested for gunning down two men in Lahore. A car following Davis, also belonging to the US embassy, crushed another Pakistani. Davis’ arrest has strained the relations between the US and Pakistan with the US threatening to cut aid to Pakistan. Deputy attorney-general Naveed Inayat Malik, who represented the federal government at Thursday’s hearing, told LHC Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry that the foreign ministry needed more time to submit a response on the diplomatic status of US official Raymond Davis.
Khwaja Haris, the advocate-general of the Punjab government, told the court that the federal government alone could determine whether Davis has diplomatic immunity.
