PM assures fair deal to Norway
India has told Norway that it will “attempt to find a fair solution” to the issue of the cancellation of 122 telecom licences by the Supreme Court. It has also assured the Norwegian government that it will accord “fair treatment” to all the telecom companies.
India’s assurance to Norway came during a structured meeting that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had with Norwegian PM Jens Stoltenberg here on Monday. Both leaders are here to participate in the Second Nuclear Security Summit which kicked off with a dinner tonight for over 50 world leaders who are here to participate in this multilateral meet.
According to sources, the PM assured his Norwegian counterpart, “The government will attempt to find a fair solution within the bounds of Indian laws. It will give equal treatment to all (companies)... it won’t be based on political considerations.”
That the Norwegians would raise the issue of Telenor with the Indian government was known for some time especially as the Norwegian government is the main shareholder in the company.
The issue of the two Indian kids currently in foster care in Norway was also discussed by the two PMs during their meeting. Mr Singh told the Norwegian PM that India is keen to see a “god and amicable solution emerge which would ensure the welfare of the children”.
The issue of two Italian Marines currently in a Kerala prison for allegedly shooting down two Indian fishermen in February figured in the talks between the Indian PM and his Italian counterpart Mario Monti, said sources.
