PM to Lanka: Keen to maintain ties
The Prime Minister in his letter to Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse wrote: “Our two governments have, over the last three years, engaged intensively in the immediate tasks of relief and rehabilitation for those displaced by the conflict, as well as the more long-term effort of reconstruction of national infrastructure.
Much important progress has been registered on this front and I wish to record my appreciation of the assistance your government has provided to various Indian agencies implementing projects of national significance on the ground in Sri Lanka.”
Having chosen not to tread the beaten path and support the US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka, India is now at pains to explain why it voted the way it did. Sources said the vote “supports India’s line of policy on Sri Lanka” and that it “voted for a cause which will help Tamils feel secure”. Reiterating that New Delhi would not like “issues to affect relationships”, sources at the same time expressed concern for a situation where “the political process of devolution of powers” in the island nation is not moving.
