Police, allies kill 18 rebels in Afghan

Kabul, May 11: The Afghan police, troops and intelligence agents backed by Nato forces killed 18 militants in a joint operation in Afghanistan’s restive southern province of Helmand, the interior ministry said. Six militants were also arrested during the operation in Helmand’s Sangin district. It was one of a string of operations Monday that officials said left at least 30 insurgents dead in southern and eastern Afghanistan. In the Shah Wali Kot district one Afghan man was killed and a woman wounded after insurgents attacked a house on Monday evening.

Clamour for Nepal PM’s resignation
Kathmandu, May 11: Raising the pitch against Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, a group of 10 political parties have come together under the umbrella of the Maoists to join the clamour for his resignation.
A meeting of 10 parties represented in the Constituent Assembly demanded Mr Nepal’s resignation, which they said was crucial to finding a way out of the deadlock. The Maoists have decided to form an alliance with political parties who are “committed to national independence, secularism and a federal democratic Constitution”. —PTI

Bangla cop in trouble for stalking girl
Dhaka, May 11: As Bangladesh witnesses a growing anti-stalking campaign by women and rights groups, a policeman was suspended on a charges of harassing a college girl in western Gopalganj, reports said here on Tuesday.
Constable Abdul Qaiyum was put under suspension and ordered to report to the police line on Monday after a second year female student of Bangabandhu University College complained that Qaiyum harassed her with an indecent wink near the college gate. —PTI

Women MPs have crucial role: Gilani
Islamabad, May 11: Pakistan PM Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday said the elected women parliamentarians have very important role to serve country’s female population by solving their problems and guiding the government for their welfare. Talking to women parliamentarians at the Prime Minister’s House, he said such efforts would not only improve the living standard of women but also contribute towards the overall development of the country, reports our Pakistan correspondent.
