PPP majority at stake, Gilani may lose his job
Dec. 15: As the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) struggles to remain in power, the Prime Minister, Mr Yousaf Raza Gilani has little chances of survival, official sources said. “The Prime Minister has to go. There will be an in-house change before the mid-term elections”, a source close to the decision makers told this newspaper.
“The PPP has lost its majority in a way (as Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal has parted ways with the coalition and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement is threatening to follow suit). If MQM decides to quit, the PPP will lose its majority by a good margin”, he added. The JUI-F quit the government after Mr Gilani sacked one of its ministers. The Prime Minister also sacked another minister of his own party amid corruption charges.
Political analysts believe the government can still stay for a good one year if all the parties form a national government sans Prime Minister, Mr Gilani, as the new allies will definitely seek as change at the top. Constitutionally, the elections are to be held in 2013. Mr Gilani, in the meanwhile, has contacted the splinter group of Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) — labelled as PML-Like Minded — to ‘invent’ majority.
Mr Gilani on Wednesday called the president PML-LM and the chairman senate standing committee on foreign affairs senator, Mr Salim Saifullah Khan, and invited him for a meeting, officials said. Mr Saifullah Khan confirmed the telephone call saying he will consult his other colleagues before accepting the invitation. Mr Khan said the links between government and the Opposition are required for the democracy and that he “welcomes the PM call.”
