Samy to announce details of his resignation on December
The Leader of Malaysia's largest ethnic Indian political party, S Samy Vellu on Sunday said that he will announce the details of his resignation as Malaysian Indian Congress Presidenton December.
Samy has been at the helm of MIC for the past 31 years, the longest anyone has been President of the minority ethnic Indian party, which is an important component of the ruling coalition of Barisan Nasional party, headed by premier Najib Razak.
The 74-year-old leader said he looked forward to stepping down as MIC President as it would give him plenty of time to spend with his family, friends and also the community.
"On that particular day (Dec 13), I will also announce what my plans are after I step down from the party," he told reporters after officiating Malaysian Hindu Youth Council's 46th annual general meeting here, national news agency Bernama said.
He has held his post since 1979 for 11 consecutive terms.
Samy, was the longest serving minister in the cabinet until he lost his parliamentary seat in the 2008 general elections.
The veteran leader lost the Sungei Siput parliamentary seat which he had held for four terms.
Vellu announced recently that he intended to retire in early 2011, paving the way for his present deputy, G Palanivel, to succeed him as acting President until the party holds its next Presidential elections.
Earlier this week, there were unconfirmed reports in the local media that Vellu may be appointed as the government's special envoy for infrastructure as part of a deal which will see him quit as the MIC president.
The reports said that he would enjoy ministerial status.
According to reports, Vellu was expected to visit India and its neighbouring countries in his new capacity to help secure infrastructure projects on behalf of the Malaysian government as well as foster bilateral ties.
