Senior media person shot dead in Nepal
A senior Nepalese media person and an active member of the Nepali Congress was shot dead by a group of unidentified assailants in the country's Dang district, just a week after another media entrepreneur was attacked.
Devi Prasad Dhital, Chairman of Tulsipur FM radio was killed on Thursday when a group of five unidentified gunmen opened fire while he was returning home, police said.
The victim was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Dhital who was also an active member of the Nepali Congress had been contesting for the post of NC general conference representative.
The incident happened just a week after another media entrepreneur Pramod Shah, Director of Radio Janakpur, was thrashed by a group in Janakpur in Dhanusha district of southern Nepal, critically injuring him.
Meanwhile, various news organisations have come together to condemn the killing and to raise concerns about the recent spate of vicious attacks on journalists in the country.
President of Federation of Journalists (FNJ), Dharmendra Jha issued a statement condemning the attack on the journalist and urged the government to take severe action against the perpetrators.
South Asia Media Commission also issued a statement saying that various forces were trying to suppress the freedom of expression through such attacks.
So far, three media entrepreneurs have been killed in Nepal over the past one year, according to Jha. Arun Singhaniya of Janakpur and Jamim Shah of Kathmandu were killed by unidentified people a few months ago.
