Singapore Airlines tests find no problems with A380 engines

Singapore Airlines said on Monday its inspections had found no problems with the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines used on the carrier's Airbus A380 superjumbo planes.

"We completed engine inspections on all 11 of our A380 aircraft and did not find anything of concern," the airline's spokesman Nicholas Ionides said in a statement to AFP.

"Any further checks that may be recommended by the manufacturers will of course be done, and in the meantime we continue with our regular routine checks."

The Trent 900 engines were also in use on a Qantas A380 plane that was forced to make an emergency landing on Thursday in Singapore after a mid-air blowout minutes after taking off from the city-state's Changi Airport.

Singapore Airlines said the findings from the inspections were reviewed with Rolls-Royce, which has come under scrutiny after the Qantas plane mid-air drama last week.

Rolls-Royce shares slumped by more than 3 per cent in initial trades in London on Monday after Qantas said it had found oil leaks in some engines made by the British firm.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said rigorous testing had uncovered the anomalies on the Rolls-Royce engines on three separate aircraft, pushing back the return to action of the A380 planes by 72 hours.

"The oil leaks were beyond normal tolerances," Joyce told journalists in Sydney on Monday. "All of these engines are new engines." "At this stage, Qantas does not expect to operate the A380 fleet for at least another 72 hours."

On Friday, a Qantas Boeing 747 also had to turn back to Singapore after another model of Rolls-Royce engine also failed in mid-air.
