Taliban carry out public execution

The Taliban shot dead an alleged murderer before a large gathering in the restive North Waziristan tribal region, the second such public execution this month by militants in northwest Pakistan.
Waheed Khan, a 28-year-old resident of North Waziristan, was shot and killed before a crowd of 200 people in Datta Khel area on Wednesday for allegedly killing a tribesman on June 12.
“They (Taliban) fired three bullets in his chest,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying by the Daily Times newspaper.
“The people were stunned by the Taliban-style justice,” the witness said.

PML-N wants good ties with India: Sharif
Islamabad : Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) chief Nawaz Sharif on Thursday said his party advocates friendly ties with India, reports our Pakistan correspondent.
“We should have good neighbourly ties with India. Resolution of issues should only be through talks,” he said. Mr Sharif said he was happy over resumption of the dialogue process with India, saying, “It will ensure peace in the region.”

‘Arctic sea ice melting 50% faster’
New York : Arctic sea ice melted 50 per cent faster than the average rate during May 2010, with combined global land and ocean surface temperature being the warmest on record for the period from
January-May, studies have suggested.
Research at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has shown that the combined global land and ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for the period from January-May. During May 2010, Arctic sea ice melted 50 per cent faster than the average May melting rate, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Centre. Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent during May 2010 was a record low at 4.3 million square kilometres below the long-term average. —PTI

US officers meet man after Osama
Islamabad : US embassy officials on Thursday met with an American construction worker detained in Pakistan several days ago while on a solo mission to kill Osama bin Laden.
Gary Brooks Faulkner claims he set off for Pakistan after God appeared to him in a dream and ordered him to kill Al Qaeda’s leader to avenge the September 11, 2001, attacks in the US, according to Pakistani security officials.
The police detained Faulkner on Sunday in a forest in northern Pakistan, where they said he was found carrying several weapons, including a pistol and a sword. —AP
