Tamil Nadu ‘source’ of sex trafficking: US
The US has accused India of being a “source, destination and transit country” for forced labour and sex trafficking. An official report released by US secretary of state Hillary Clinton refers to the Sumangali scheme in TN, in which employers pay young women a lump sum to be used for dowry at the end of a three-year term.
Just a few days ago, DC had reported on the plight of minor girls recruited for Sumangali Thittam by textile units in Krishnagiri, and the administration’s efforts to curb the menace.
Sumangali Thittam has led to a lot of girls dropping out of school in Denkannikottai taluk near Hosur. The plight of the girls came to the knowledge of the administration after a headmistress at a government school in Chakalapalaya reported three minor girls being recruited in Erode.
