GoM clears mining bill draft, 26% for locals

New Delhi
A panel of ministers headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday cleared the draft mining bill. The bill seeks to balance the rights of indigenous people against the need for development, and proposes that 26 per cent of profits from mines be shared with locals.
Land acquisition and displacement of local people has become a major issue in recent years. Several large mining projects, including those being promoted by Vedanta, Posco and Arcelor Mittal, have faced opposition from locals. There will be one more meeting of the group of ministers, after which the bill will be sent to the Union Cabinet, said mines minister B.K. Handi-que. n More in Business
