UK MP warned over burqa row
London, July 25: The controversy over wearing veil or burqa in Britain deepened as Conservative MP, Mr Philip Hollobone, has been threatened with legal action if he implements his decision not to meet Muslim women wearing veils at his constituency meetings if they refused to lift their veils.
Liberty, a civil and human rights organisation, has warned Mr Hollobone, who represents Kettering in the House of Commons, that his refusal to meet women in burqa would amount to discrimination and warned him that he faced legal action if did so.
The Kettering MP plans to table a private members’ bill on banning veils and this most probably will be debated on in December, but the Tory-LibDem coalition government will not support the bill. The immigration minister, Mr Damian Green, recently made it clear that Britain will not make wearing veil or burqa illegal.
