US officials identify shooter in Afghanistan massacre

US officials on Friday identified the US soldier who allegedly shot and killed 16 civilians in Afghanistan as Staff Sergeant Robert Bales.

The Sunday attack by Bales, reportedly enroute from Kuwait to the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, ignited fresh public anger in Afghanistan at the US presence and plunged US-Afghan relations to their lowest point since the 2001 invasion.
