US wants Pak to extend Kayani’s term
Islamabad, July 21: The Pakistan government is under pressure from the US to extend the tenure of Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani “for effective continuity” of the war on terror in the lawless tribal areas, official sources said.
“The government is considering several things. One to give him an extension or elevate him to the post of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or create a new post (which ensures his authority),” said a source close to the decision makers.
“If he is elevated as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (which is largely a ceremonial post), Gen. Kayani will be given special powers to control the affairs,” he added.
Himself, Gen. Kayani — who is due to retire later this year — has decided to remain silent over the matter of extension in his service and has left this matter to federal government. Sources said Gen. Kayani does not want to affect the promotion process in the Army due to the extension.
