War-displaced to begin returning to S Waziristan next month
The repatriation of people displaced by the military operation against the Taliban in South Waziristan tribal region of northwest Pakistan will begin in the first week of December, officials have said.
A grand 'jirga' (council) of the Mehsud tribe and the political administration of South Waziristan agency agreed on the phased return of the displaced people.
The meeting was also attended by Army officials.
South Waziristan's Political Agent Atifur Rehman, in his address to the jirga, said the displaced people would first return to six villages where complete peace had been restored.
Each family will be provided Rs 25,000 on its return.
Free transportation and rations for six months will also be provided to them, he said.
A 120-member delegation of tribal elders will be sent to the area before the repatriation begins to assist the process.
