Woman crushed by Pak naval chief's squad
A woman died after she was hit by a vehicle in naval chief Admiral Muhammad Asif Sandila's motorcade in the Pakistani capital, a media report said on Wednesday.
The unidentified woman was trying to cross the Islamabad Expressway on Tuesday when she was crushed in a hit-and-run accident involving a vehicle of the Naval Police that was escorting Sandila's car, The Express Tribune reported.
Sandila was going to Islamabad from the airport in Rawalpindi at the time. The woman was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors declared her dead.
Her body was shifted to the mortuary.
An unnamed police official said the vehicle did not stop after hitting the woman.
However, the police station in Shahzad Town, which has jurisdiction in the area where the accident occurred, is yet to register a case as officials were trying to establish the identity of the woman, the report said.
The women's details were broadcast on television and publicised through loudspeakers in mosques in Shakrial, where the incident occurred.
Police said the woman, who was in her late thirties, looked like a Pathan as she was dressed in traditional Pashtun clothes.
Police station chief Khalid Masud said Naval Police officials had approached police to assure them of their cooperation in the case and were ready to compensate the woman’s family once she is identified.
They could face legal action if the victim's kin decide to register a case, police said.
A spokesperson for the navy said the incident was being investigated and appropriate action would be taken after a report is submitted.
Police said the registration number of the vehicle involved in the incident was given to them by Naval Police.
When questioned who was at fault and how the woman managed to get on the highway when it had been blocked for VVIP movement, Masud only said the incident was being investigated.
He said pedestrians were not allowed to cross the five-lane highway and were supposed to use overhead bridges.
"Nevertheless, a life was lost and it is important to probe the incident," he said.
