‘Toon’ spirit!

You friend’s changed her profile picture to ‘Little Lulu’ and ‘oh so cute’ you think, and then you see many of your Facebook pals changing their profile pictures to Jerry, Mickey Mouse, Calvin and a host of other lovable cartoons. Cartoon week was celebrated on Facebook where people chose a cartoon character as their profile picture. They reminisced about their favourite cartoons, shows and relived their childhood. Teens tell us about their favourite cartoon characters.
For management student Praneeth S., Pokemon is the ultimate cartoon. “It’s a journey of a boy called Ash who wants to be a Pokemon champ. He begins his journey with his first Pokemon called Pikachu, which he gets from his professor. Pikachu is my favourite character!” recollects Praneeth, adding, “I used to watch it when I was in school. I would hate the weekends ‘cos Pokemon wouldn’t come on TV then!”
When talking about all-time favourite animated characters, how can we miss out on the little bundle of mischief called ‘Jerry’? A part of the popular Tom and Jerry series, Jerry the mouse always manages to outwit Tom the cat. “Tom and Jerry is a series that anyone from a child to a grandparent can watch. Despite being so little, Jerry manages to get the better of Tom and this just shows that ‘big surprises come in small packages,’” says BCom student Harshitha S.
While Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny, Pluto, the Powerpuff Girls, Brain from Pinky and the Brain are some of the characters picked by cartoon fans online, student Priya R. picks Popeye. “I Love Popeye. Even now, I watch some of the Popeye episodes online. His super abilities after eating spinach, his love for Olive oil and his fights with Bluto make the show so interesting. I still sing the I’m Popeye the Sailor Man song,” she says.
Other favourites picked by cartoon lovers include Richie Rich, Lulu, Spongebob Square Pants , Penolope Pitstop, Betty Boop, Bayblade, Winne The Pooh, Princess Jasmine, Dexter, Kayley from Quest for Camelot, toons from Baby Looney Tunes etc.
Fifteen-year-old Pranay P. watches a lot of cartoons, but his favourite is Chota Bheem’ “He eats a lot of laddoos and that’s how he gets his strength. Laddoos to him is like what spinach is to Popeye. His friends Raju, Chutki and Jaggu are fun too,” he says.
Some of you may have outgrown the “cartoon-watching days”, but memories of your favourite toons are bound to bring a smile to your face. Like Walt Disney says, “Animation can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
