Best days of our lives

Bunking class. Fests. Throwing chalk at each other. Fights, crushes and laughing like you’ve never laughed before. You’ve done all this through the three or four years of your undergrad life and now when you’re in the last semester, it hits you hard that you will be experiencing none of this after a few weeks or months. Students in their last semester are making the most of their final college days ‘cos they know that they’re never going to experience these days again.
Final year communicative studies student Tanu Kulkarni, who just attended a sleepover with her pals, says, “All of us are living in denial. We’re actually counting the days to go in college which is exactly 30! We’ve put every other activity on hold to spend time with each other and in college.”
Tanu’s group now has fun plans for every night. “We’ve decided to finish all our assignments in February so that we can have fun in March. None of us want to believe that college is going to end soon!” says Tanu.
For student Richa Kapoor, the fact that she and her buddies won’t be in class together after a month is what is hitting her the most. “People are applying for their masters, going for interviews etc. We’re a gang of four and have been with each other for three years! Now everyone’s going to do different things after college and we will be separated,” she says.
Richa and her friends are now attending college regularly and making sure that they don’t bunk classes! “We don’t go home early — we just want to be together. We interact with teachers a lot more now. We’re enjoying every class now ‘cos we know that we won’t sit together anymore after a month!” she says.
Final year BBM student Jason Rego is currently in Mangalore with 60 of his classmates enjoying a great trip. “We take advantage of the attendance, take advantage of our teachers being nice to us and also take off to M’lore in the name of an industrial trip,” he laughs. “With 29 days of college left, it hasn’t sunk in fully that undergrad life will be soon over. Once our graduation ceremony takes place, it will hit us that we’re going to part ways. All of us are bonding and having a good time together. We’re just chilling out,” he says.
Tanu and her friends are doing random, crazy things like packing bags and heading out to places. “We should have done such things during the first two years of college too! We’ve now realised how attached we are to each other,” says Tanu. Short trips, sleep overs, shopping and partying — they’re doing it all! “Our parents aren’t complaining ‘cos they know that it’s just one more month of fun!” adds Tanu.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
