Facebook turned avid tie-breaker
While Facebook and Twitter made finding friendship an interesting and effortless experience, new-age networking sites also gave “falling in love” a whole new meaning. They turned out to be the biggest breakers and makers of relationships in 2010.
Even before actually meeting your love, you can get to know a lot about him through his profile on Facebook. Be it the kind of music or books she likes or the causes she stands for, you know what all you have in common.
Nishant Varma, 19, and Sakshi Sharma, 18, are in a relationship for a year now. It all began with a casual friend request that Nishant sent her on Facebook. “We had a few common friends on Facebook, and I sent her a friend request. She accepted it and we started chatting after a while. We had a lot to talk about as I noticed her interest in books and music, was similar to mine. And I came all the way from Bengaluru to Delhi to meet her after three months,” says Nishant.
“Now we are forever hooking up on Facebook and Twitter,” adds Sakshi.
“The change of status from single to committed makes a lot of difference in one’s life,” says Sarthak Harbola of Dayal Singh College.
He agrees that gone is the era of hefty cellphone bills. “There is no such worry as cutting your love talk short, as Facebook ensures 24x7 connection, and that too for free. Then one shares much more like pictures and videos with each other,” he adds. “A girl who just broke up will first update her relationship status on Facebook and then inform her friends,” adds Rashi Walia, a young professional.
Spying on your partner is an activity many youngsters have been indulging in. Rashi explains why sites become reasons for ugly spats for cupid-struck youngsters. “I have friends, who keep going back to their boyfriend’s Facebook page to know what he is upto. They want to know trivial stuff like whom he’s talking to, who posted something on his wall, in whose photos was he tagged and what not. So in a way online networking is really helping and hurting people’s love life,” says Rashi.
She adds that a very close friend of hers met a guy from Mumbai, on Facebook.
