When everyone’s drowned in FIFA fever, how can we forget those awesome football flicks that youngsters have loved? This FIFA season, young footie and movie buffs tell us the football flicks that they have liked and those that you should watch with your buddies.
For BBM student Ritansha P, She’s The Man, Bend it Like Beckham, The Goal trilogy and Greenstreet Hooligans are the four football movies that top her list. While She’s The Man is a chick flick, Greenstreet Hooligans, she says, is a serious soccer movie. “It’s about how football is in the lives of every Britisher and how crazy and seriously they take every win or loss of their club.”
The Goal series has three installments namely Goal: The Dream Begins, Goal: Living The Dream and Goal: Taking On The World. As for Gurinder Chada’s Bend It Like Beckham, which shot Parminder Nagra and Kiera Knightley to fame, this comedy plus drama movie, is a must-watch. Its story of Jess (Nagra) and Jules (Knightley), two girls who love to play football and the objections and obstacles they face. “Bend It Like Beckham is one of my all-time favourite films. I love how they portray that even women can play football. I can watch it again and again!” says engineering student Shruthi N.
If a comedy film is what you want, then Shaolin Soccer is the one for you. It’s a film about a former Shaolin monk reuniting with his five brothers, to use his superhuman skills to play football. There’s Only One Jimmy Grimble, The Damned United, Once In A Lifetime and Escape To Victory are some of the other flicks related to football that you can watch.
If you’re looking at documentaries, then soccer buff Anirudh AG suggests you watch Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait and Germany: A Summer’s Fairytale. “Zidane, the master footballer is captured in this documentary as he plays a match for Real Madrid. The documentary on the Germans shows their journey to the 2006 World Cup,” says Anirudh.
Go ahead and celebrate the filmi footie fervour.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
