French connection

May 22 to June 5 are dates that every tennis buff has marked on his/her calendar as they gear up to watch the French Open 2011. Enthusiasts are religiously rooting for their favourite players. The 110th edition of the Grand Slam, which is played on clay courts, is currently taking place at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. Afici-onados of the game are eager to see if five-time French Open champ Rafael Nadal will clinch the title again. Last year, Francesca Schiavone, an Italian player emerged victorious in the women’s category.
Although a hardcore Roger Federer fan, engineering student Pratik KS, says, “He’s lost his winning streak and has not had a great season. I feel that Nadal, who is the King of Clay will win.” While talks of the Rafa-Fedex rivalry have always been there, it’s hard to ignore Serbian Novak Djokovic who has had 24 straight victories this year! The current world number two is a player that many are betting on. “Novak’s got a good chance too, His 26 match-winning streak is unbroken and Nadal lost to him recently too (in the Miami Masters).” But on a hopeful note, he says, “It would be dream come true to see Federer win. If he does, then we would’ve won all the Grand Slam titles. He’s the emperor and nobody can take his place!”
Also, Belgian Kim Cljisters, who was almost ruled out due to injury, is recovering and will play the French Open. It remains to be seen if Caroline Wozniacki will prove why she’s number one on the rankings. Serena Williams’ fans are disappointed as she will not be playing due to injury. As for the Men’s Doubles, Indian fans can relish yet another win if Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi continue their winning streak. Currently ranked No 1 in the doubles category, the duo emerged victorious at the Miami Masters. “It will be brilliant to watch the Indian Express win the French Open,” says Prarthana R. “Lee-Hesh are unbeatable. The Bryan brothers rock too. As for the Women’s Doubles, the Williams sisters (Serena and Venus) would’ve been the best if they had played, thanks to their intensity on the court,” adds Pratik.
For student Shruti K, rooting for Roger Federer is something that she will never grow tired of. “I hope he finally wins the French Open.”
It’s time for some French action!
