Future calling
The season after graduation is when youngsters go through a phase when they have to carefully choose their future paths. They are often stuck at crossroads where they have to choose between further studies and jobs. Students, who have just graduated, share their plans with us.
For mass communication graduate Smriti Kumar, who studied in Mount Carmel College, working for a year and then doing post graduation sounds feasible. “I want to do my post-graduation in radio production, but first I wanted some work experience to decide whether I want to work for a few more years or I want to study. I’m working as a web writer in Planet Surf. Though radio production is what I have planned for now, this job will help me figure out whether I'm more interested in writing or radio,” she says.
Her friend Ganesh Shankar a BCA graduate from St. Joseph’s College too has opted to work before doing his post graduation. “This will help me get an experience and a chance to get to know the industry. Working before your PG will give me a better understanding of my aptitude and what suits me. It will help you make a well-informed choice about your future,” says Ganesh, who is currently working as software professional.
Aditi Banerjee who just finished a three-year course in communicative studies is planning to work for a year and alongside that, take up CAT classes as she wants to do her MBA. “I want to do my MBA abroad for which work experience counts. The MBA will have a value as my work experience will enrich it. I’m not looking at a three-year work experience as some universities suggest as I don’t want to put in too much time working and then do my PG really late. I want to reach a balance between the two,” says Aditi, who plans to start a food and travel or lifestyle magazine one day.
While she is currently looking for a job, she also says that taking a break form studies will help her prepare for CAT, which will increase her knowledge in the math and logic modules. “I hope to get into the Ivy League colleges or New York University. Among my friends, one got into University of Berkeley and is going to do mass communication there. Two others are planning to do their PG in journalism,” she says.
Whether it’s a gap year or their first job or further studies, young graduates are carving their future with hopes of making it big. Here’s wishing them loads of luck.
