Get set for a ‘killer’ solo debut
Whether you’ve always loved The Killers or missed that boat completely, it’s great news either way. Lead vocalist, keyboardist and all out rocker Brandon Flowers is getting his solo debut ready as you read this! Right now, there’s only one song out officially — Crossfire which sounds very much like a Killers’ track with shades of U2.
Interestingly, the choice to release this track first was made by Flowers’ young son’s instant love of the song. Flowers said, “Kids can always pick out the hits.” The album will be called Flamingo (tribute to Flamingo Road, in the non-glitzy part of their otherwise neon hometown Las Vegas) and currently, two other tracks have been announced, Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas and a duet with Jenny Lewis (look for the ‘Carpetbaggers’ video on YouTube featuring her and HRH Elvis Costello) called ‘Hard Enough’.
Despite the Killers’ hip identity, Flowers’ grew up Mormon and is still very religious, a theme that is visited through the album including a track about a pilgrimage people make every October 4. Despite often getting into trouble for mouthing off about other bands and their inappropriate behaviour (he thought Green Day did bad when they played the song American Idiot in the UK — he didn’t like the idea of a bunch of English kids not ‘getting’ what the track was about) his intelligence and talent have inspired many artists. One of the nicest (and charmingly hilarious) tributes is paid by the inimitable Rufus Wainwright in his song about Flowers, Tulsa — “Your suit was the whitest thing since you-know-who I fear that that savior I mentioned may be you.” Flamingo will be released this September.
