If at first you don’t succeed
Whether it’s learning the guitar or a new language, summer is the time when many teens take up new things. However, picking up anything new can be fairly daunting, and the temptation to give up can be strong. How do you keep yourself motivated?
During these years, it’s a personality trait to undertake things in “jerks and leaps”. Interest at this age is a constantly fluctuating process. One thing to keep in mind is that the level of activity cannot reach a plateau. It has to constantly change or else we are faced with the imminent danger of losing interest.
Apart from keeping your learning graph intact, you should also ensure that while picking a new activity to learn, you don’t just get pushed into it by your parents, or follow your friends. Instead, opt for an activity that you are ready to commit yourself to.
If you are easily bored, choose short modules and mix them up to avoid monotony. Remember that while every skill that you learn is going to help you, something that has economic returns in the short term can act as a great motivator. And whatever you do, do keep your parent’s budget in mind!
