Masters in juggling
Emma Watson almost quit the Harry Potter series because her shooting schedules clashed with her University examinations. If you thought that young stars, smitten by stardom and fame, set their education aside, then you are in for a surprise. They know that a degree is important and have set their glamorous world aside to finish their education. Some of them have mastered the art of this tightrope act.
“I’d started modeling when I was in college. Modelling was my passion then but education was equally important. If I had missed classes because of shooting schedules, I’d come back and make up for it. But I avoided working during exam times,” says actress Anushka Sharma, who is basking in the success of her latest venture Band Bajaa Baraat.
Ayushi Arora, a Bengaluru-based model, admits that she had to do quite a bit of juggling during her Miss Bengaluru days. “My college was in the outskirts of the city and my grooming classes for the contest took place in the heart of the city! I had to walk for around one kilometer everyday to catch a bus or auto,” recalls Ayushi. She immediately quips, “This is the only reason I lost three kilos in one month!”
It is easy to lose track of time when there are too many things at hand, but these young stars could give any management guru a lesson in time management. “As childish as it may sound, but I had a chart of ‘things to do’ stuck in my room just to ensure that I don’t miss on anything,” says Ayushi.
Educational institutions also play a pivotal role in moulding the passion of students by understanding their needs. Sahithya Jagannathan, former Miss Chennai is thankful to her college for granting 15 days leave for an international pageant. “When I had to go to Korea for ‘World Miss University’ pageant, I wasn’t very sure about how I’m would cope up with my studies but thanks to my faculty and friends who helped me through the notes and spared their time to help me out when I came back,” says Sahithya.
These young achievers say that a focused mind is the key to managing various tasks with panache. “I ensure that I do all my ramp shows and photo shoots after college and not bunk classes unless it’s urgent,” she continues.
It is not just those who are in the showbiz industry, but even young sportspersons say that hitting books after strenuous and tiring training sessions can take its toll. Swimming champ Agnishwar, who has represented the country during several international swimming meets, says, “It is difficult to come back and study after hours of practice. To make things easier, I make sure I study something everyday. When I’m abroad, I talk to my professors through Skype to clear doubts. But, there are times when I’m not able to attend exams because of important international meets, in that case I take all my exams together and prepare harder.”
