Mush ado about packing a punch

When was the last time you picked up a pen to write a love letter? Sounds boring and traditional, isn’t it? If yesteryear ways of expressing love are passe for you, then meet these young Cupid-struck teens, who still believe in the age-old ways of saying, “I love you”. Be it that long-treasured rose in your notebook, or the first love poem that someone special wrote for you, lovers today are walking back in time to make it special for that someone in their life.
Although Lavanya Jain, a DU student, is single, she wouldn’t mind a love letter or poetry from the guy who wants to propose to her.
“I don’t think it’s a great idea to send SMSes hundred times in a day when you can simply write a beautiful letter or a card which will stay with the girl forever. Many of my friends have boyfriends who still write letters for them, and believe me, the tradition of that one red rose in your favourite novel is still a hit,” she says.
So, if you thought velvety red roses are well, boring, you are wrong. While traditionally men were the ones who would woo their lady love with love-drenched messages and carnations, it is now the turn of new-age girls to express themselves.
“When we have flowers to say it all, why think of alternatives? My boyfriend still gives me a single rose and expects me to treasure it. And our greeting card days are surely not over as yet. We’ve been dating since Class 10, and even today he gets me cards with mushy love messages. The thrill of sending text messages never took away the charm of writing cards or letters,” shares Radhika (name changed), a final year student.
Shipra, a student who loves to write letters to her boyfriend, says, “Greeting cards and love letters are still my favourite. It may sound cheesy, but I still treasure that one rose from the big bunch that my boyfriend gave me. He finds it silly, and I often ask him to write something for me, but he’s not game.”
While most guys don’t really like love letters and poetry, there are some who do it just to make their girlfriends happy. “I don’t understand poetry, and my girlfriend is a great poet who often writes for me. Since I also want to surprise her with poems, I often steal some from the Net, and write them for her. I gifted her a collage of my pictures with her, with cute one-liners on her birthday,” says Akhil, an 18-year-old student.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
