Rewinding the rush

The thrill, the adrenaline rush and the excitement that runs through our veins when we’re watching our favourite sport is unexplainable. 2010 saw a lot of exhilarating moments and events in various sports. Students, who are sports fanatics, share with us their favourite 2010 sporting moments.
For B.A. student and football player Aloka D’souza, Spain’s victory in the FIFA World Cup had to be the best moment in sport this year. “Even when Spain lost their first match, I kept telling everyone that they’d win the title. I just knew that they’d emerge victorious and I kept waiting for the finals,” says the Spain supporter, whose favourite footballer is David Villa.
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar scoring his 50th ton in Test cricket is what B.Com student Dominic Savio picks. “I’ve always been a great fan of Sachin and have watched all his matches this year.” Dominic’s another favourite sport moment was when his favourite footballer Wayne Rooney signed a five-year contract with Manchester United. “Rooney was actually going to leave Man-U, but in the end he stayed back!” smiles the Manchester United fan.
Football matches that saw score-lines like 5-0, 6-0 and 7-0 were good to watch this year, says sports buff Ritansha Patni. “I was supporting Portugal during the World Cup, so I loved the match where they defeated Korea 7-0. I love Cristiano Ronaldo. This time, he won the FIFA player of the year award, he’s the most expensive footballer in football transactions and he’s the star player of Man-U,” she says, adding, “Another favourite moment was when France got knocked out of the World cup!”
The treble for Inter Milan and India’s display is what sports buff Sanjana P liked watching. “Inter Milan won the Italian league, Champions League and the League Cup. It’s quite a historic feat!” she says. India’s performance at the Commonwealth Games is also memorable for her. “Despite all the Kalmadi controversy, India did manage to stand second on the medal table, which was quite good,” she adds.
While we reminisce about the sporting moments that gave us a kick this year, let’s look forward to another year of absolute ‘sport’y
fun!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
