A treat for all the comic buffs
Noooo, he doesn’t get the ring like that! Come on, you stupid alien.” Sounds familiar? Well, this is a common scene in theatres for those who get peeved with a different movie adaptation of their favourite comic books. And with movies like Cowboys& Aliens, Captain America, The Green Lantern and X-Men First Class, the trend of comic book-inspired movies is on the rise.
For comic buffs this is splendid news, but one that can easily turn sour if the movie is not up to the mark. For instance, when Andrew Garfield wore the latest outfit for Spiderman 4, critics all over the world sharpened their claws and hoped that the movie would do justice and provide an explanation for “this horrid costume that looks like it is made out of several basketballs”.
Are youngsters in the city satisfied with the movies, in terms of styling, costumes, animation effects, storytelling and so on? Or would they rather go back to reading?
“To begin with, remember that films are a totally different mode of communication. A film-maker has the liberty to come up with a different adaptation. The innovative rendering of Batman by Christopher Nolan gave a new dimension to the Batman franchise. So far, the movies have been good with the advanced technology used,” says Soumyabrata Sil, a student of Hyderabad University.
Luqmaan Siddiqui of Little Flower Junior College (LFJC), says, “I do feel that movies are justifying the comics. X-Men First Class was by far the best adaptation. Similarly, even Superman and Batman were executed well. But it does frustrate movie buffs when stories are tampered with, like The Green Lantern.”
For Sadiyah Lasania from St Anns ISC Junior College, the movies are the best thing. “Nothing compares to the high of watching comic characters which you have read about come to life on screen. But it was disappointing to watch Superman Part 1 and 2, the effects were pathetic,” she says.
Another drawback to these movies is that that’s the final image you will always have. “With motion pictures, you get new images, but ones that remain forever. I mean, I can’t imagine anyone other than Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. This is good if the movie is amazing, otherwise it will leave you with a bad taste,” says Shubhankar Valegoakar, also from LFJC.
However, only with a few hiccups, these movies have managed to weave their spell on youngsters. And they can’t wait for the rest of the movies to hit the theatres.
