When weird works

Lady Gaga turns up on stage in a raw meat dress, Katy Perry performs looking like an ‘egg’, Rihanna shows up in a spiky leather corset and Beyonce dresses as Robocop — celebrities can be outrageous when it comes to dressing up. Some may find their outfits stupid and weird, but a lot of teens admire such eccentric dressing.
Lady Gaga is known as much for her bizarre clothes as she is for her music. From shocking everyone by wearing a raw meat dress to dressing up as Kermit the Frog, from wearing a ‘bubble’ dress to wearing an outfit made of human hair, this gal’s done it all. Katy Perry, who’s also known for her quirky dressing, was seen dressed like a cake and also in many ‘fruity’ avatars.
Fashion designing student Nurus Sabah respects the outlook these celebrities have on fashion. “It’s quite admirable that they’re so daring. A lot of people are inspired by Gaga. For Halloween, everyone wanted to dress up like Gaga or Katy! Some people might be shocked ‘cos these outfits have never been worn before, but they surely make style statements,” she says. While she would never wear such outfits, she would certainly be inspired by them.
When it comes to fashion, there are a horde of eccentric celebs. Rihanna has turned up at her performances in a cat suit and even a black outfit described as ‘space girl meets rock ‘n’ roll life guard’! Gwen Stefani, another outrageous style queen is known for her unconventional outfits. Such outfits are bold and it’s nice to see celebrities experiment, says graduate Vasavi P. “I actually like Gaga’s outfits — they make bold statements and I love Rihanna’s red hairdo,” she says.
Sabah loves Rihanna’s pop star edge that’s reflected in the singer’s style. “She even turned up in a tuxedo once. I also like Pink and her ‘tough girl’ style, Fergie’s wild onstage looks and Gwen Stefani and Victoria Beckham’s style,” she adds.
Singer Adam Lambert, also known for his out of the ordinary style and pop star Katy Perry, are the celebs that appeal to student Rohita T. “They’re so many singers out there and these strange outfits actually make me notice them. The way Adam dresses up makes him stand out,” she says.
But Rohita also believes that celebs should stay within limits when experimenting. “Gaga’s meat dress was sick. Once, she showed up for a world cup match wearing just lingerie! Celebs should know where to draw the line,” she adds.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
