A world without FB?
This can’t be happening,” was the common response of millions of teens worldwide when rumours that social networking site Facebook was shutting down surfaced last week. The rumours went viral as panicked users contemplated a world without Facebook, a world where much of communication and entertainment has become synonymous with the site created by Mark Zuckerberg.
Teens in India too were hardly immune, and even now, as the shock waves caused by the rumours have receded, thoughts of “What will we do without Facebook?” are being expressed.
Says Priyamvada Chopra, a self-professed Internet addict, “When I first saw the news on people’s status messages, I wondered why Mark would want to shut it down considering he’s making so much money off it? I’m so used to going online and logging onto Facebook first thing in the morning that if the site ever shut down — I don’t know what I’d do. It’s how I keep in touch with my friends and make new ones too.”
Facebook is what BBA student Brian Caeiro accesses every morning too. He says, “It has so many unique activities. But even more than the activities, if Facebook were to shut down, I will miss my friends.”
Joyston D’Mello, a second year Banking and Insurance student, says the possibility of the site shutting down, though scary, seems remote. “There are just too many people logged on to the site across the world. It will get very difficult to ever shut it down,” he reasons, adding, “I deleted my Orkut account when Facebook came into the picture. It can’t close down now. I’ll die!”
