24 children injured as school van overturns
Twenty four children were injured when their school van overturned near Chittilappallam in Karumaloor village on Monday at 9 am. The students were of KEM High School, Alangad, all in the ages of four to fourteen.
The van skidded off the road and fell into a paddy field. Eyewitnesses said the driver was trying to negotiate a curve without reducing the speed.
Twenty two of the injured were discharged by noon after first aid at Paravur taluk hospital. Adarsh (11), fractured his arm and was discharged by evening. A kid who injured his thumb was later shifted to Ernakulam Specialist Hospital.
Police registered a case against van driver, Sirajudeen, 24. According to police, the van that overturned was temporarily arranged by the school authorities as its regular bus was in workshop.
The school bus fell into a field near the Purapally Kavu Bhagavathy temple. The police said that it would intensify its measures to ensure safety of school children in vehicles.
