3 touts held for admission racket
The Kochi police on Wednesday held three people on charges of swindling lakhs from several people, by offering admissions in engineering and medical colleges in Chennai and Bengaluru.
The arrested were identified as Rejin, 29 and Bibin, 23 of Karunagappally, and Anoop Raj, 23, of Kollam.
According to the police, the racketeers had been cheating several people for the past 10 years.
The fraud came to light when one Gopalan made a complaint against the gang after Rs 7.53 lakh which belonged to him, was siphoned off by Rejin.
The gang went into hiding after taking the money by offering him an MBBS seat in Laxmy Narayana College in Pondicherry.
The police said Rejin’s history of fraud began in 2002, while he was doing his BDS in Nagercoil.
“He opened a company named ‘Bishop House Information Centre’ at Karunagappally. Soon, he opened another company named Leeds Institution and collected money from several people.
Within no time he opened another institution at Ariyedathu in Kozhikode,” said Vijayasankar, sub inspector of Ernakulam North police station.
After closing the Kozhikode office, he opened firms at Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Dubai. “Rejin met Anoop and Bibin while he was in Thiruvananthapuram.
After swindling unsuspecting people of their money, the three used to stay under cover at Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Dubai. The money thus swindled was used to lead a luxurious life,” Vijaysankar said.
The three were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate and remanded in custody.
