6 districts may run out of LPG
LPG supply in six districts of central Kerala will stop in the next couple of days with the closure of Indian Oil’s bottling plant at Udayamperoor here following a gas leak on Thursday.
The explosives department that suspended the licence of the plant has asked IOC to take steps to plug the loopholes and secure the plant. The plant will be opened only after an inspection by the explosives commissioner.
“IOC is yet to give a report regarding the steps it took. The plant will be opened only if the explosives department is satisfied with the steps taken,” official sources said.
LPG leaked when a driver tried to transfer the gas fromtanker to the plant. It is learnt that Indane supply in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukky and Palakkad will be hit if the IOC plant remained closed for another two days.
District collector P.I. Sheikh Pareeth said a meeting of oil firms, experts and people would be convened here on September 30 to create awareness on the steps to be taken in case of gas leaks.
“It has come to our notice that some people in the vicinity tried to start motorbikes to escape from the accident scene on Thursday, and this was enough to trigger a major inferno. Luckily nothing happened,” Pareeth said.
