Back pain, high BP haunt cops
Nine out of ten policemen in Kochi city were diagnosed with high blood pressure and back pain; this was revealed in a medical camp held at Maharaja’s College on Friday.
The camp which was held as part of the district convention of the Kerala Police Association in association with the Indo-American hospital at Vaikom, saw 183 policemen appearing for medical checkups.
Doctors who checked the policemen said that most of them have blood pressure close to 150, as against the standard rate of 80-120.
City police commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar who also consulted the camp doctors, was shocked to know that he has a blood pressure of 152.
The commissioner, who suffers from neck pain for some time, is now being asked to go for physiotherapy.
The medical checkup also revealed that only a few policemen have diabetes, while many suffer from back pain.
However, doctors said that body pain may be because of lack of rest and sleep.
“Policemen usually have double or triple shifts. As is known, solving crimes is not a walk in the park. It is natural that their blood pressures are high and have body pain,” said neurologist Dr V Vasudevan who examined the policemen.
Dr Daisy A Thomas, a physiotherapist, said that most police officials had either back or neck pain or both.
