Better profits for low floor buses with low fair

With the transport department yet to hike the fare of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) low floor buses in the state, more regular commuters now prefer to travel by the AC and non AC buses. After the recent fare hike, there is a considerable increase in the daily collection of JNNURM buses, according to transport authorities.

“Due to the disparity in the rates between the JNNURM and private buses, more commuters are now travelling by JNNURM buses and there is an increase in the average daily collection. It will be too early to take stock of the situation as the previous week has holidays. Though there is not a huge increase in the collection, it is expected that there would be a gradual increase in the collection in the coming days. The increase in collection will be assessed after a week,” said Mr. Antony E.X, traffic controlling inspector, KSRTC.

The officials of the KSRTC depot have plans to operate additional JNNURM services in certain routes in the city like the Vyttila-Vyttila. Currently, the city has 42 AC buses and 78 non-AC buses and the KSRTC has received permits to operate 12 non-AC buses in the Vyttila-Vyttila route. However, due to staff shortage the authorities are unable to operate additional services.

As of now, there are no chances of any fare hike for JNNURM buses as the decision on fare hike and fare-stages could be taken only by a Special Purpose Vehicle, including officials of Corporations and the KSRTC. The SPV is yet to be constituted in the state.
