Bid to kidnap convert girl near HC foiled
A girl escaped a kidnap bid in front of the Kerala High Court premises on Friday, where she was summoned following a habeas corpus plea filed by her parents.
The police chased and caught one of the kidnappers after the car in which she was forcibly taken, was stopped and stoned by the public at the Kaloor signal.
The girl, Amna, 25, earlier named as Nimmy, from Kayamkulam, had recently converted to Islam from Hinduism.
After completing her postgraduation and B.Ed, she was teaching at Krishnapuram Tanvir Central School in Kollam. The girl converted to Islam at Tabiathur Islam Sabha in Muqaddar, in Kozhikode.
The police said the kidnap bid was carried out by alleged RSS men. The arrested man, Sarath, 29, of Wadakkanchery had arrived in the city for an RSS baithak at Pavakulam temple. It is learnt that the plan to kidnap the girl was decided at the baithak.
“We are also in search of three more men who escaped from the spot when the mob surrounded the car. We have traced the cell phone location of one G.Ratheesh of Pavakulam, who was part of the kidnap gang and he’ll be arrested soon,” said Assistant Commissioner of Central Police, Sunil Jacob.
The High Court on Friday, had rejected the plea submitted by her parents and said that Amna is an adult and has the right to continue in her faith. According to the police, when Amna came out of the court a car rushed towards her, pulled her inside and drove away towards the east.
People from Kozhikode who accompanied the girl, immediately informed the police control room, which helped the cops catch the gang before they could leave the city limits.
Sarath was presented in court and was remanded in police custody. Amna will be sent back to Kozhikode under police protection.
