Boothathankettu to get speedboats
The scenic Boothathankettu dam, situated some 60 kms from here, will soon add speedboats, house boats and an adventure tourism facility for visitors.
An amount of Rs 2.62 crore has been sanctioned by the tourism department to the district tourism promotion council (DTPC) for these facilities and to improve the basic amenities at the tourist spot.
The 5-acre park at the dam site is maintained by the DTPC and the Periyar Valley Irrigation Project.
"The 6km-long speedboat ride from the site to the Salim Ali Park at Thattekad will take 10 minutes. But those who prefer houseboats will have a leisurely ride enjoying the nature and the wildlife on the banks of the river," said DTPC secretary T.N. Jayashankar.
According to him, adventure tourists found the place attractive for trekking, rafting and horse rides. The forest in the area has ancient 'muniyaras' or caves for those who are interested in exploring aspects of history and heritage.
This was among the 16 projects the DTPC had proposed to the government for implementation this year.
