Bypoll: 86pc polling in Piravam

A record 86.3 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise in Piravom during the bypoll on Saturday, surpassing the previous best of 85.45 per cent in the assembly constituency in 1987.

According to the initial estimates, 1,58,055 of the1,83,170 voters in the constituency exercised their franchise.

Among those who voted, 79,655 were women and 78,400 men. Of the 137 booths, as many as 16 recorded 90 per cent or more votes.

Both the ruling UDF and Opposition LDF claimed that the high turnout would go in their favour. The counting of votes would be held on March 21.
