Cameras in place to detect waste dumpers

The city corporation on Saturday installed a surveillance camera at Edappally Muttar Junction to check waste dumping.

The first phase of the Rs 10 lakh-project was inaugurated by mayor Tony Chammany. The initiative is expected to be a big help for the police and the corporation authorities, as they had been finding it hard to tackle the issue of waste dumping in public places.

“The camera installed at Edappally will be capable of recording good-resolution visuals of 20 days. The video will be recorded in a memory unit attached to the camera.

These visuals will be extracted on every 20 days to catch the culprits,” said T.K. Ashraf, chairman of corporation health standing committee.

The second phase of the project will see corporation installing cameras in border areas of the city and other places where waste dumping is still rampant.

This includes areas like Perumpadappu, Willingdon island, Kaloor and Chembumukku. The corporation is also mulling allocation of more funds towards the project.
