‘Caste’ allegation against MGU VC
A controversy is brewing in the Mahatma Gandhi University with a student alleging that the vice chancellor had abused him by calling him his caste name and lodging a complaint in this regard with the Kottayam police.
The complainant Chambakkara Pulluzhath P. K. Geethakrishnan, an MPhil student at the School of Disability Studies said in his complaint to Kottayam DySP, P. D. Radhakrishna Pillai, said that when he approached the vice chancellor, Dr Rajan Gurukkal, on February 29 at the VC’s chamber saying that his professors had cut down his marks in the second semester, the VC abused him calling him by his caste name.
The DySP has forwarded the complaint to the circle inspector concerned to make a detailed inquiry.
Meanwhile, Dr Gurukkal told Deccan Chronicle that the allegations are baseless and concocted.
“This student had complained to various national commissions against his department and I never thought he would turn against me. He had performed badly in the internal assessment and did not have the required attendance,” the VC said.
“However, when he pointed out that his blood sugar level was 400, which prevented him from attending classes regularly, I was shocked and thought of helping him out.
Then I asked him to submit a medical certificate to prove the same and promised to help him. I never used any caste name nor do I know his caste,” said Dr Gurukkal.
