CBSE honcho on crusade against Dyslexia
When her daughter was diagnosed with the developmental reading disability, a top CBSE official paused for a moment. She decided it was time she not only took care of her child but also reached out to other children facing similar problems.
Dr (Mrs) Veera Gupta, secretary and CVO of the Central Board of Secondary Education, says her own “bad” experience while taking her child to pediatricians prompted her to think of ways to have highly-trained personnel taking care of such kids.
“They (doctors) prescribed my child medicines but did not tell that my child was Dyslexic, a condition that actually needs training to overcome their areas of difficulty,” she told DC during a visit to the city.
She said she got things moving and formed a group of mentors, who would in due course be trained from a world-renowned Dyslexia correction centre based in California. She plans a one-year training programme for such children to be conducted by the mentors who are trained at the Dyslexia Awareness Resource Centre at Santa Barbara, California.
“If we receive a minimum registration from interested parents, say around 15 from a region, we could fly down four or five facilitators to such areas, including Kerala,” she said.
The official is currently organising the efforts at a personal level, and does not have an organisation of her own.
